Fetal Calf Serum
At Access Biologicals, our fetal calf serum originated and was processed in the United States. As a fetal bovine serum supplier, we’re proud to offer the best quality fetal calf serum for your scientific and medical needs.
Fetal calf serum, also known as fetal bovine serum, is a primary growth media for cell cultures due to its high level of nutrients. It has a high concentration of embryonic growth factors.
Production of Fetal Calf Serum
Similar to fetal bovine serum, which is collected from the blood of a calf fetus, fetal calf serum is collected from cows less than a year old that underwent an ante and post mortem veterinary inspection. The blood is collected in a blood bag aseptically and set in a refrigerator to clot and separate the serum from the clotted blood. The specimen is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the different cell types and the clear yellow fetal calf serum is frozen separately. It is then further inspected and processed to ensure that it is suitable for cell culture use.
Uses for Fetal Calf Serum
Since fetal calf serum helps promote cell culture growth, it’s commonly used in research laboratories. Some of the ways that it can be used include production of vaccines, in vitro fertilization and cloning.
